MASON CITY — NIACC baseball coach Travis Hergert has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association NJCAA Division II North Plains District Coach of the Year.
Hergert helped lead NIACC to a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA Division II World Series in May.
“It’s a reflection of all the hard work that players, assistant coaches and support staff put in,” Hergert told the Globe Gazette. “I’d like to thank the assistant coaches more than anything, because without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”
NIACC was 31-18 in Hergert’s first year as coach.
“To me, it makes you appreciate all the hard work you put in in the past,” he said.
The Trojans won the Region XI tournament to qualify for their first-ever World Series where they went 2-2 with wins over Madison College and Murray State College.
Hergert said high finish at the World Series has helped recruiting.
“It’s been phenomenal so far in the last month and a half,” Hergert said. “We just have to work hard to keep this momentum.”
