AUSTIN, Texas – The Cyclones (18-21, 3-5 Big 12) broke program records for RBI and runs scored on Saturday in their 12-4 loss at No. 6 Texas (37-4, 7-0 Big 12). The 2013 offense has tallied 201 RBI this season while scoring 227 runs.
Each of Iowa State runs against Texas starter Kim Bruins (8-0) was earned, making it the first time since March 8 against Louisiana-Lafayette that the Longhorn pitching staff has allowed an earned run at home. Bruins threw a complete game, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out two.
Brittany Gomez and Tori Torrescano made individual marks on the Cyclone record books during the contest as well. Gomez, who had two hits, scored two of the Cyclones’ four run, giving her 40 runs scored on the season to lead the team. The freshman is the first Cyclone since Jenny Condon in 1989 to score 40 runs in a season. Torrescano, in her final plate appearance of the game, walked for the 26th time this season, tying the single-season record.
Senior Erica Miller was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI in the contest. Miller has 42 RBI this season, second-most in Iowa State history and joins Jorden Spendlove as the two Cyclones with 10 doubles on the year.
On the first play of the game, Gomez slapped a single back to Bruins, who picked up the ball and threw it into right field, advancing Gomez to third and the speedy outfielder made her way home as the right fielder committed the second Longhorn error of the play.
Two batters later, Miller doubled to the right field wall, scoring Sarah Hawryluk, who had walked, giving Iowa State the 2-0 advantage.
On the back of a grand slam from Taylor Hoagland, the Longhorns plated nine runs in the bottom of the first for a 9-2 lead after one inning. Cyclone starter Riley Fisher (2-6) lasted one-third of an inning, charged with two hits, four walks and six runs before being replaced by Taylor Smith.
Texas had another chance to score after a leadoff double from Erin Shireman to start the bottom of the third but, although Shireman would advance to third on a fly out, Smith coaxed two more fly outs to get Iowa State out of the inning untouched.
Following Shireman’s example, Torrescano doubled to lead off the top of the fourth but would get no further and the Longhorns maintained their seven-run lead entering the bottom of the frame.
Aly Cappaert and Gomez started the Cyclone fifth with back-to-back singles and, after Hawryluk walked for the second time, Miller drove home Alex Tinaglia – pinch running for Cappaert – and Gomez to bring Iowa State within five, down 4-9.
