Yes. Rick Mathes says he is running for the at-large city council seat vacated by Scott Tornquist. Bill Schickel says he is running and so does Jose Barragan, Jr.
Is this for the special election? If so, how long will they retain that seat?
Yes, special election. The winner keeps the seat for the 2+ years remaining in Tornquist’s term.
I don’t know much about Mathes except he is a realtor and that scares me because we have enough special interest on the council.
He’s not only a realtor, he has rental properties in Mason City. And I have heard he’s not a very good landlord. Doesn’t make repairs, upkeep, etc. And his houses rent for alot of money.
Some realtors are good and some are bad. We seem to have a lot of the bad ones here. There is a banker from out of town that has had every one of his rentals tagged as unfit for human habitation. They will tear them down and we will have vacant lots all over.

Yes, he’s banned. He’s been told he’s banned. At this time, he’s basically just harassing me and thousands of NIT readers. I’m watching him, and so are others. His threats are noted, his antics are snickered at. Really, I’m too busy with NIT and my business and my family to pay much attention to him. I won’t acknowledge his presence with replies directly to him. Report his comments at once, please, and they will drop off the site.
There’s quite a few comments that we can’t report because he us responding to someone else.
By the way, banning an IP address is a short-term solution- as in a few minutes. Anyone with technical expertise can work around that and get new IP’s pretty quickly, thereby allowing them to continue commenting. Philo is banned in that he’s not allowed to comment on NIT anymore and his comments will be removed as soon as possible. A real ban is pretty much impossible to set up. We’ll all have to police him by reporting and removing comments as a community.

Was at a wedding this weekend and got to talking with a group of people including a sheriff’s dispatcher, a police officer and a sheriff’s deputy. Somehow the conversation shifted to Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s office and the 3 law enforcement people said that working with the CG was never a pleasant job. None wanted to be specific but all 3 agreed that CG has an “Our s— doesn’t stink” attitude. I asked who Sheriff Pals is responsible to and they said in most counties the sheriff reports to the Supervisors but it is not necessary. Who does Sheriff Pals report to or is he a single entity responsible to no one?
The sheriff reports to the voters, really, as he is elected. He does give reports to the Supervisors, as they control the funding to his agency (sheriff’s office).
I know that he is elected. But, I would think that he does have to explain his department’s actions and his rationale for doing things the way they do out there. Thanks for the info.

Last night I overheard some high schoolers talking about an incident that happened after the MCHS vs. Clear Lake baseball game involving some team members.Anyone hear anything?
I hear that it was retaliation towards a couple of past MCHS players that are now playing for Clear Lake. Some say that the head coach was involved? Haven’t heard any particulars yet but will keep probing. More to follow but this will probably get swept under the rug.

I heard a couple kids drove past one of the players house who had transferred to clear lake and yelled go mohawks after their victory and a couple parents got upset.
Some parents get too wrapped up in the kids sports. If the parents would step back, it might not get to such extremes.

Stopped by to visit a friend this afternoon. Shortly after a Cerro Gordo County Deputy pulls up a couple houses away and parks in a driveway. There are some neighborhood kids playing with water squirt toys and water balloons in a front yard. I can just imagine from what I’ve been seeing from the media that this is going to get very ugly and violent. Instead of retreating from the heat into his air conditioned home, what he does next is inexcusable! This is going to escalate into looting…

Encountered a wise group of seniors last night while in news-gathering mode. Told me some extremely interesting information. One tale was about a certain elected Mason City official who has been “carried” out of the the Park Inn Hotel lounge on numerous occasions by staff there. There is a bar downstairs. Another tale is that Younker’s in SB Mall is closing, among other stores leaving. First I had heard of the Younker’s store leaving, not sure if that’s a fact or not.
I don’t doubt that this could be true of an elected official. But why just tell people about it and talk about it. Everyone these days has a cell phone. Why hasn’t anyone taken pictures or a video?
I doubt the ‘elected’ official is our laughable mayor due to the fact there is has not been a fork lift or group of power lifters to carry his ass out bar.

What may seem delusional to some makes perfect sense to me. I will continue to take student loans and will not be paying them back. The interest is ridiculous and almost criminal. They can get the money the best way they think they can. I will continue to study and at the right age of 58 hopefully get a job one day that can afford me some measure of comfortability in my old age. But paying student loans? Not in the picture.

Finish Line, much like American Eagle and J.C. Penny before it, is a much bigger failing than just our mall. Those companies are closing stores all over the place. American Eagle was actually one of the few stores in the mall that brought people in and did an ok business but their company is in trouble, so our store, along with many others got the ax. The mall has failed with Cookies Etc. and Jitters both of whom should be been worked with and retained. But Birdsalls? Good riddance!

The solicitation came in an official Mason City government envelope and the letterhead looked to be official Mason City stationery.

Was the city paid to do this? Why on earth is the city lending its name to a private business? Does the city vouch for this private company? Does the city or its employees have…

@Rhambo-Great questions all. I would say that seeing as how the mayor signed it that would make the city liable. Also, it came on city stationary, in a city envelope with a return. envelope from the city. I didn’t know the city could be in competition with private business. Maybe it is a scam by Solberg.
I rent my house and I got a notice sent to me, not addressed to my landlord. And yes it was in city letterhead, city envelope, everything just like yours.

Philly. Your comments are property of NIT. You willingly on your own accord came onto this site and posted comments. Matt now owns those comments and if he doesn’t want to delete them he doesn’t have to. No different than if you donate a piece of furniture to say Salvation Army. Then you decide two days later you want it back. They don’t have to give it to you.
