WASHINGTON D.C. — The Trump administration has taken decisive action to secure the nation’s borders and uphold American values by removing individuals tied to one of the most notorious anti-American figures in modern history: “Screaming Mary”.
Federal agents moved this week to arrest three Iranian nationals following Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s formal termination of their lawful permanent resident statuses. Seyed Eissa Hashemi, Maryam Tahmasebi, and their son are currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending their removal from the country.
The enforcement action centers on Eissa Hashemi, the son of Masoumeh Ebtekar (pictured at top). Known as Screaming Mary, Ebtekar was the lead spokeswoman and propagandist for the Islamic militants who stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979. During the 444-day siege, 52 Americans were subjected to starvation, beatings, and mock executions while Ebtekar orchestrated media propaganda to mask the physical and psychological terror being inflicted upon the hostages.
Ebtekar later rose to the highest levels of the Iranian revolutionary regime, serving as a vice president as recently as 2021. Despite her family’s direct ties to the regime’s hostility toward the United States, Hashemi and his family were granted entry visas by the Obama administration in 2014 and awarded permanent residency in 2016 through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. The administration stated that her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country, noting that the issuance of new diversity visas has since been suspended.
This week’s arrests are part of a broader, aggressive strategy by the State Department to ensure that those connected to anti-American terrorist regimes are not permitted to find a home on U.S. soil. Other recent actions include the termination of the legal status of the niece and grandniece of deceased IRGC Major General Qasem Soleimani, who are now in federal custody. Additionally, the legal status was terminated for Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, the daughter of a former Iranian National Security official, and her husband; both have left the country and are barred from future entry.
The Department of State credited the successful operations to a close partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. The administration has made its stance clear: the privilege of American residency will no longer be extended to the families of those who have spent their lives working to undermine the United States. The administration declared that America can never become home for anti-American terrorists or their families, and under the current leadership, it never will.
