WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The seventh-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated Purdue, 32-6, on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Gymnasium.

The Hawkeyes tallied 20 takedowns while the Boilermakers had three, and Iowa had 55 match points to Purdue’s 22.

“We can open some of those up a bit,” said head coach Tom Brands. “Relax and wrestle, free yourself up. When there is a wide gap, you are freer. There are lots of opportunities to widen that gap so I can be freer. When it is tight, don’t wrestle tight. When it’s tight, you just blow it open. It gets easier and easier; it’s not easy, but it gets easier.”

At 125 pounds, sixth-ranked Dean Peterson kicked things off for the Hawkeyes, earning a 9-2 decision over Ashton Jackson to put Iowa on the board early.

No. 8 Drake Ayala kept the momentum rolling at 133 pounds with a technical fall over Blake Boarman. Ayala needed 5:54 to win 19-4 and pick up bonus points.

At 141 pounds, Kale Petersen added another win for Iowa with a 7-4 sudden-victory decision over Isaiah Schaefer. After a lengthy scramble in overtime, Petersen got the takedown to secure the win.

No. 19 Ryder Block picked up a late takedown in the third period to regain riding time and secure a 5-0 decision at 149 pounds over No. 31 Gavin Brown.

At 157 pounds, Victor Voinovich III earned a 5-0 decision over No. 28 Stoney Buell to give the Hawkeyes a 17-0 lead heading into intermission.

Purdue got on the board at 165 pounds, winning a top-five matchup as fourth-ranked Joey Blaze defeated No. 3 Michael Caliendo by a 7-4 decision.

Iowa added six team points at 174 pounds as third-ranked Patrick Kennedy won by injury default over Aidan Costello, who was unable to continue for the Boilermakers.

At 184, Gabe Arnold secured a 4-1 decision over No. 26 James Rowley.

Iowa picked up more bonus points at 197 pounds, as Harvey Ludington needed only 4:23 to pin Noah Weaver.

Purdue closed out the dual at heavyweight with a 4-1 sudden-victory decision from Hayden Filipovich over Gage Marty at 285 pounds.
