Ames police mark end of “incredibly long” VEISHEA week

AMES – A forgettable week for Iowa State University was also an exhausting, trying week for police, as they marked the end of the 2014 week of VEISHEA that saw dozens of arrests and the event itself cancelled.

Police Car LightsWeekend roundup from Ames police, unofficial VEISHEA edition (April 13)

What an incredibly long week. Mother Nature really stepped up and helped us out on Saturday night. Last night we arrested 26 people on 36 charges, cited 14 people, and responded to 152 calls for service.

For the entire week, we arrested 82 people on 115 charges, cited 56 people on 59 charges, and responded to over 760 calls for service. Obviously, those are some high numbers.

We would like to thank a lot of people for helping us get through this week. Thanks to all of our law enforcement partners, especially ISU Police, the Story County Sheriffs Office, and the Iowa State Patrol. We could not have done it without you. We also need to thank other City staff who came out to help. I know we’ll miss somebody here, but we saw people from the City Manager’s Office, Public Works, City Council and many others. This really demonstrates the City commitment to a Total City Perspective. We also need to thank Iowa State University for sending over a sea of help all dressed in red. We know ISU administration was out, Dean of Students, Student Affairs, and many others.

Last, we need to thank all of our citizens. We received many kind emails and posts of support. Many of you dropped off food with your well wishes. You also sent us information which lead to follow up arrests from the disturbance Tuesday night. Many people put in some really long hours this week and we are going to try to catch up on some sleep and see what this week brings. Be Safe.

It is a damn shame that a few thugs can ruin this for everyone. Just look at the additional cost that was caused by these idiots.

A bad week for all the serious students and faithful alumni at ISU. Most of the trouble makers were not even students but to the ones that we’re drop out and go to IOWA the real party school.
