Wendel was born in Algona on August 25, 1943. He graduated from Titonka High School in 1960 and started farming in the Wesley area. He was probably the most dedicated and most particular farmer in the area, taking pride in clean fields and a well-kept yard. You could find him outside working before the sun came up until evening when he enjoyed his ice-cold beverage. Wendel also drove truck for Bituminous Material & Supply in Algona for 25 years. He was an honest and hard-working man where quitting or giving up were never options.
To many he was Wendel, but to his family he was their rock and always put their needs ahead of him. He expected a lot from his family but gave them much more in return. Wendel especially loved to spoil Mary Ilah with red roses just because he could and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
Wendel is survived by his wife Mary Ilah (McGuire), children Terry and his wife Michele of Ames, Iowa and their children Brant (Farzaneh). Sallie (Adam) Coon, and Wade (Ellen); Todd and his wife Julie of Overland Park, Kansas and their children Lauren (Jeff) Jaramillo, Brett and Mitchell; Troy and his wife Julie of Adel, Iowa and their children Nicholas (Katrina), Anthony (Hannah), and Francis (Catilyn); Chris and his wife Joy of Fort Dodge and their children, Kylie, Paige, Emily, Jaydon, Rin, MaKenzi, and Ariel; Carlena (Shawn) of St. Michael, Minnesota and their children Danika, Maguire, Morgan, McKenna and Nash; 11 great grandchildren; brother Ronnie (Celi) of Wesley; brothers and sisters in-law Linda Kunert, Mark (Norma) McGuire, Cindy (Jon) Toal, JoAnn (Andy) Devin, Frank (Mary Kay) McGuire, Bernadette (Joe) Kaney, Theresa (Les) Penick, Charlie (Carrie) McGuire, Ralph McGuire and Shelia (Tom) Timmerman; and many nieces and nephews.
Wendel was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Dorothy, wife Elaine (Neswold) Weiland, father in-law and mother-in-law Lloyd and Anna Neswold; brother and sister-in-law Kendall (Beverly); sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Larry Olson; father in-law and mother-in-law Mark T. and Carol McGuire; and brothers in-law Dennis McGuire and Doug Kunert.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Jenna Shipler, Teri Doocy, Brittany Cressler, Paige Weiland, MaKenzi Charlson, Maybell Davis and Allie Hicks for the exceptional care they have shown to Wendel and Mary Ilah over the years. You are so appreciated!
