MASON CITY – Tenants in a North End Mason City apartment house were left shaken after a person was shot Thursday night, and the landlord is facing consequences.

At 8:49 PM Thursday evening, January 15, 2026, dispatch in Mason City began receiving reports of multiple gunshots fired near Casey’s at 9th and N Federal Ave. The Mason City Police Department responded and learned that a 35-year-old victim had been transported to the hospital by private vehicle. The victim sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to an extremity. The victim claims not to know who shot him or why. Police did not release the name of the shooting victim.

Police conducted a neighborhood canvas and spoke with numerous residents.

Police also found additional shell casings outside the victim’s apartment at 729 N Federal Ave (rear door or east side of the building in the alley).

Multiple tenants, including children, were present in the apartment buildings here (725 and 729 N Federal Ave) when shots were fired, police explained.

The investigation is ongoing, police say, and they are seeking more information from anyone who can provide further details. Call Mason City police at 641-421-3636 with any details.

Due to ongoing issues at this apartment, the Mason City Police Department said they will also begin nuisance property abatement against the landlord. Records show 725 N Federal Ave is owned by VANDENBERG STEVEN C & TRACIE L.
