Thomas John McGee was born August 7, 1953, in Cresco, Iowa to Edward and Alvira (Drilling) McGee. Tom attended Notre Dame High School while working a side job driving a milk truck for John Grube, delivering canned milk to the Cresco Creamery. Tom also played baseball in high school and was a renowned pitcher. During this time he was awarded the prestigious National Scholar Athlete Award and later graduated with the class of 1972. His catholic education and upbringing were important to him.
On June 1, 1985, Tom was united in marriage to Vicki Morse at the Methodist Church in Winterset, IA; to this union 3 children were born: Megan, Brian, and Ann. In August of 1987, Tom started working for the Donaldson Company in Cresco as a press operator. He chose to work the second shift which enabled him to see his children off to Notre Dame Catholic School. On the second shift, Tom would take his dinner break at 6:00 p.m. and eat with his parents. After his parents passed away his new routine of calling Vicki at 6:00 began. Tom retired from Donaldson in 2015, during his time there he made lifelong friends. To stay busy, he later worked as a custodian at Luther College and Notre Dame Catholic Church and School.
Tom lived on a farm most of his life and later purchased his parent’s acreage. During his lifetime he grew crops and later focused more on raising livestock, including cattle, hogs, goats and poultry. However, he took the most pride in raising sheep. He often researched to better and improve his flock, including acquiring guard donkeys to watch over them. One of Tom’s greatest joys was sharing his knowledge of livestock. He was most well-known for bringing his animals to Notre Dame’s Fair Day.
Most important in Tom’s life was his family and faith. He was known for his sense of humor and the many jokes and pranks he played. He was very proud of his children and granddaughter, Addelynn. Tom regularly attended mass and prayed the Rosary daily. His legacy of hard work and kindness will live on through all those who knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Vicki; three children, Megan McGee, Brian McGee, and Ann (Geoffrey) Langreck all of Cresco, IA; granddaughter Addelynn Riggs; two dogs, Mia and Daisy; beloved farm cats; his siblings Mary (Gene) McGee Light of Iowa City, IA, Joan Franklin of Cedar Rapids, IA, Barbara (Dennis) Stewart, Cedar Rapids, IA, Patrick (Rebecca) McGee of Cresco, IA, Kathy (Cliff) Schueler of Hiawatha, IA, Jane McGee of Hiawatha, IA, and Robert (Kathi) McGee of Vinton, IA; brother-in-law Brent Newman of Des Moines, IA; Vicki’s siblings Robert (Ellie Berry) Morse of Lorimor, IA, Virginia (Keith) Robinson of Winterset, IA, and Leon (Cherie) Morse of Cape Fair, MO, and many nieces and nephews.
