HAMPTON, IOWA – A pack of Northern Iowa grave robbers are facing justice after cops doubled down and rounded up the first two suspects, with two more still roaming free.
The Franklin County Sheriffs Office has arrested two individuals following an extensive investigation into the disappearance of grave markers and historical site markers reported missing over the past month. These markers were taken from multiple rural and city cemeteries across Franklin County, with additional reports of missing markers in Butler and Cerro Gordo Counties.
Search warrants were executed Friday afternoon at two locations:
• 9 4th Ave. NW, Hampton, Iowa: Executed by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Hampton Police Department.
• 720 Pine St., Dumont, Iowa: Executed by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
The following individuals have been charged:
Brandon S. Smith, 44, of Hampton, Iowa, has been charged with:
– Theft in the 1st Degree (Class C Felony)
– Criminal Mischief in the 1st Degree (Class C Felony) Theft in the 4th Degree (Serious Misdemeanor)

Lauren A. Johnson, 34, of Dumont, Iowa, has been charged with:
– Theft in the 1st Degree (Class C Felony)

Two additional suspects have been identified, with charges pending related to this series of crimes.
