DES MOINES – A man jumped from a Des Moines bridge Saturday evening and lost his life, authorities say.
On June 15, 2024, at approximately 6:07 PM, Des Moines Police Department patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to the Jackson Street pedestrian bridge over the Raccoon River to investigate a report of a person jumping into the river.

First responders arrived and saw a person, apparently unconscious, in the water near SE 1st Street and Scott Street. The Des Moines Fire Department Water Emergency Team deployed and were able to rescue the person from the Des Moines River near the SE 6th Street bridge.
Lifesaving efforts, including CPR, were initiated and the patient, an adult male, was transported to UnityPoint – Methodist Medical Center.
Despite ongoing care, the patient died at the hospital.
Des Moines Police Department detectives continue this investigtion. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available for release.

The person who died in this incident has been identified as 44-year-old Des Moines resident Brian Eugene Moffit.
