MASON CITY – A tree planting event will be held in Mason City this week, and the public is invited to participate.
The City will partner with Mason City Community High School Students to plant approximately 45 trees along 12th Street SE through 14th Street SE on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.
Planting will start at 9:00 am at the intersection of 12th Street SE and South Virginia Avenue, continuing on 13th and 14th Streets SE. The planting is anticipated to last through the morning. Staff is asking motorists to avoid this area between the hours of 9:00 am and 11:30 am if at all possible. If you need to travel in this area on this day, please use caution and slow down for students, staff, and volunteers.
The public is invited to volunteer with this tree planting. If you are interested in helping plant trees on Tuesday, September 19, please arrive at the intersection of 12th Street SE and S. Virginia Avenue by 8:30 am and dress appropriately for the weather and planting conditions.
In the event of inclement weather, the tree planting will be held on Wednesday, September 20.
Last week, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Governor of Iowa, came to Iowa to announce funds from the Biden Administration to help “cities across our Hawkeye state to plant, nurture, and maintain millions of trees.” Vilsack announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is awarding more than $1 billion in competitive grants to plant and maintain trees, combat extreme heat and climate change, and improve access to nature in cities, towns, and suburbs
