DECORAH – Northern Iowa police warned this weekend of a black bear roaming the area.

Police in Decorah said citizens should “be aware” of the potentially dangerous beast out and about in the countryside.

“We’ve had reports of a black bear seen walking by the bike trail near Trout Run Park,” police said. “It crossed Highway 9, south near the quarry area. If you encounter it, please keep your distance and let it be on its way.”

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reportedly tracking the bear. Black bears are not native to Iowa and likely roamed out of its more natural territories to the north.
