Thousands of Iowans switch political party affiliations this month

vote_hereDES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate reported this afternoon that thousands of Iowans have switched party affiliations since the night the Iowa caucuses were held.

The Iowa caucuses were held February 1, with Republicans choosing Ted Cruz and Democrats choosing Hillary Clinton. Many voters showed up to participate that night, and thousands switched parties or actually chose a party as they were previously unaffiliated.

Secretary of State Paul Pate says voter registration switches since February 1 break down like this:

No Party to DEM: 26,030
No Party to REP: 20,769
DEM to REP: 5,709
REP to DEM: 5,080
New registrants: 11,974
