MASON CITY – A Mason City teen was hurt when her suburban struck a guardrail under a bridge, flipping the vehicle and trapping her inside.

The accident took place on March 4, 2022. At 5:36 PM that day, a grey 2002 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by 16-year-old Shayla Shannon of Mason City was driving North on Highway 65 (Orchid Ave) near 300th Street when she struck the railing going under a railroad bridge. The Suburban rolled one time and landed back upright, deploying both driver side and passenger side airbags. The Mason City Fire Department arrived on scene and needed to use mechanical devices to free Shayla from the vehicle. She was then transported to Mercy by the Mason City Fire Medics.

The extent of injuries is not known at this time and the accident remains under investigation.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department, Mason City Fire Department, and Mason City Fire Medics.
