Mason City man riding bicycle struck by drunk driver

RURAL MASON CITY – A Mason City man riding his bicycle north of town was struck by a drunk driver and hospitalized.

On June 5, 2021 at 11:37 PM, Cerro Gordo county deputies responded to the 22000 block of Thrush just south of Plymouth for a a traffic collision involving a bicycle. James Alton Powell, 62, of Mason City, was traveling southbound on Thrush Avenue on his bicycle when he was struck by a southbound 2010 Dodge Ram being driven by Cody William Skiye, 28, of Mason City. Powell’s bicycle had proper lighting in accordance with the Iowa traffic code. Powell was transported to MercyOne North Iowa by the Mason City Fire Department with injuries requiring hospitalization. After an investigation, Skiye was arrested for OWI – 2nd Offense, an aggravated misdemeanor; making a false report to law enforcement, a simple misdemeanor; no insurance, a simple misdemeanor; and operating a motor vehicle too closely to a bicycle, a simple misdemeanor.

This collision is still under investigation and anyone with information should contact the Cerro Gordo County Sheriffs Office.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Iowa State Patrol, Mason City Fire Department and Plymouth First responders.

I hope the punishment is enough to make other people seriously consider the hazards of driving drunk. Unfortunately the legal system usually gives them a slap on the hand and lets them go out and do it again.

and again and again.

If you are out bicycling at night try a gravel bike. I don’t like riding that road in the daylight.

Think he should be charged with more then operating a vehicle to close to a bicycle!

Another young person driving drunk. They should not be allowed to drive.

He was taught that by his peers.

They are stupid
