Iowa man invades convenience store, shoots clerk dead

MARSHALLTOWN – An Iowa man invaded a Marshalltown convenience store and shot the clerk dead before cops caught him.

On Monday, February 15, 2021, at approximately 3:07 AM, police officers in Marshalltown responded to the Casey’s convenience store, located at 111 North 3rd Avenue, to investigate a shooting. Upon arrival, police officers located an adult male who was suffering from a gunshot wound. That person has died.

The victim is identified as Michael Ray West, age 48, of Marshalltown. Mr. West was an employee at the Casey’s on North 3rd Avenue and was working at the time of this incident.

On February 15, law enforcement personnel executed a search warrant in the 700 block of Bromley Street in Marshalltown. A suspect was identified in connection with the search warrant execution. Marshalltown police officers and DCI special agents then arrested Rocky Dean Trujillo, age 20, of Marshalltown. Police say Trujillo armed himself with a small caliber handgun, along with ammunition, from his residence, and took the weapon to 111 N 3rd Avenue, Marshalltown Iowa-a business open to the public that had customers and store personnel inside. The defendant did willfully point the gun at the victim, and willfully without justification, pulled the trigger, striking the victim In the chest, causing his death. The defendant was located, and subsequently arrested and transported to the Mershon County Jail.

Trujillo is being held at the Marshall County jail pending an initial court appearance.
