DES MOINES – The Iowa Legislature has shot down a conversion therapy ban bill that would have outlawed the practice of trying to counsel or force LBGTQ kids into being straight.

The bill was tabled in a House committee and is likely to be resurrected in the future, as there appears to be support from both Democrats and Republicans.

Conversion therapy is intended to “cure” the recipient of their same-sex sexual orientations and transgender identities, according to iowasafeschools.org. About 19 states have banned conversion therapy as Iowa looks to join their ranks in the future.
