Mason City library looks to install cost-saving windows

MASON CITY – Mason City officials say the installation of  windows that open up and have screens on them will lead to significant utility fee savings and other benefits as they look to install more of them.

In a memo to city administrator Brent Trout, library director Mary Markwalter says that 4 windows were already installed in areas of the library mainly used by staff. Those new windows open up, have screens on them, and replaced windows that did not open.   The result will be “a significant boost to employee morale” and decreased utility costs during certain months of the year.

Mrs. Markwalter says in the memo that up to $2,000 would be saved during 4 months of the year when “the library (does not) have to operate the HVAC system (except for blowers), leading to $8,000 a year in savings once a proposed project is complete.

The cost to the library to install up to 15 new windows is $15,359.00, according to an estimate submitted by Mason City Glass. There will be one or two installed in rooms that do not currently have a window that can be opened, Mrs. Markwalter told NIT.

The Mason City council will need to review and approve the contract, if approved by the library board.

when do we stop pumping money in a dead horse. why weren’t the windows put in when the 9 million was spent, now windows and then solar so whats next. markwalter will probably want a raise or submit and bill for overtime like determan did. contact your council man/woman and tell them NO

They weren’t initially put in because the money for them was taken away. You should go to council meetings instead of relying on NIT. You might learn the truth for a change.

Sounds like the two new shelter houses with toilets built in manly with no outside doors -oh well the governing gang and friends will send us a bill for them next year – signed – line my pockets.

And they didn’t thinking this during the big remodel a decade ago?

Then shut it down if they can’t afford to keep it running. They can always put it in some of the empty buildings around town. There used to be neighborhood library’s back in the day and they worked just fine.

Says the guy who hates knowledge

I don’t hate knowledge at all and I would put mine up against a imbecile who makes comments like that any day, Come on Racist, it is time for one of your ignorant comebacks. You were a loser when you ran for mayor and you still are a loser.

LOL I love how you always are trying to guess my identity. I also love how you’re always wrong. You’re a complete dipshit.

@You are a Racist-First and foremost you are always a loser. Ifantile, childish and stupid, but still a loser.

Didn’t we spend enough on this library already?

I also question how they are going to save $8,000 a year for installing 15 windows. The solar system will take a decade for a payback. Stop dumping money in this place, it is underused and oversized already.

How would you know if you never go there. People still use the library daily.

At over $1,000 a window those must be damn fine windows. Didn’t we just put 9 million dollars in this money pit a few years ago. I suppose she still wants the solar put in too. Close it down and put the library in smaller buildings around town. There are plenty of empty buildings to pick from.

That is absolutely stupid. The solar panel will outlast the building and will never be paid off. Every year it is something else with the library. Shut it down and go to satalite buildings around town.

There is no way they are going to pay that off in 5-6 years. Another lie by the damn city.
