UPDATE: Iowa man now faces 40 charges for allegedly abusing incapacitated women on video

IOWA CITY – The count is now at 40 charges that are leveled against an Iowa City man who allegedly committed sex acts against incapacitated women as he filmed them on his computer.

Nathan Schloss, age 23 of Iowa City, turned in his roommate earlier this year for beating his cat, “Fritz” until it was blind in one eye – in a highly-publicized case of animal torture.  On December 19, Schloss himself was arrested and charged with 18 counts of sexual abuse after police saw videos of his acts.

On Monday, 22 counts of invasion of privacy were filed against Schloss. These charges are in addition to the previous 18 counts of third-degree sexual abuse.

Weeks ago, Schloss turned in to police a video of his roommate, 21-year-old Leo Nopoulos, beating 8-week-old Fritz, who lost vision in one eye due to the abuse.  Nopoulos pleaded not guilty and will face a jury trial in February.

Later, Iowa City police announced that they had arrested Schloss on 18 counts of sexual abuse in the third degree.  It has been reported that police have seen videos of Schloss abusing the women.  Each count carries up to 10 years in prison.

Iowa City police Sgt. Scott Gaarde told the Cedar Rapids Gazette that Schloss had “multiple” victims and police are searching for more. They have not given a definitive number of victims.

Schloss seems to be skilled at shooting home videos, just like the video that caught his roommate abusing Fritz.  It could be this same type of home video recording that now has him implicated in the sexual abuse of an unknown number of women.

“We have identified and spoken to several of the victims involved in this manner and continue to identify others,” Gaarde told the Gazette.

The alleged sex crimes were discovered while police were investigating another crime, one in which Schloss was a victim, the Gazette reported.

Records show Iowa City police applied for and executed a search warrant at Schloss’ apartment in November.

The Gazette also reported that according to the criminal complaints relating to the sexual abuse allegations, the earliest incident occurred on May 13, 2012 and continued until September 8, 2013. Police said Schloss is shown in the videos touching and — on multiple occasions — penetrating the victim or rubbing himself on her.
