DNA evidence helps MCPD charge Plymouth man in felony vandalism case

MASON CITY – A Plymouth man has been charged in a vandalism incident that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a car in Mason City, and police used DNA evidence to help solve the case.

According to Mason City police, on March 9, 2014, extensive vandalism of approximately $3,300 was reported to a vehicle in the 500 block of 8th Street SE. DNA evidence was collected from the scene that identified a suspect that was known to the victim. Police tracked this suspect down and did more investigation which took several months for DNA comparison.

Finally, an arrest warrant was applied for on September 1, 2014 charging Jason C. Hackett of Plymouth with felony second degree criminal mischief. Hackett turned himself in to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office on September 8 and posted bond the next day. He awaits a hearing on September 12.
