CLEAR LAKE – Deputies from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with police officers from the Clear Lake Police Department and State Troopers from the Iowa State Patrol to conduct a joint traffic enforcement project on St. Patrick’s Day.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Alcohol Impaired Driving Grant made this program possible. High visible enforcement on times where drivers are likely to be drinking and driving is the focus of the grant. Being visible during this holiday helped reduce drinking and driving incidents.
The officers working this project issued 71 written memorandums and 16 citations for many different traffic violations. Two drinking drivers were tested for sobriety and found to be not impaired.

it was not a checkpoint…just a lot of cops in one area, enforcing traffic laws. all the stops had probable cause
I for one am glad that they increased patrols, drinking and driving is unacceptable, and its usually a sober innocent driver that is the one that is hurt. it pays to have a DD… its not worth the risk, ever!
@Jeremy-They call them safety checks and they do check vehicles for safety but if they notice anything suspicious it gives them probable cause to check further. It has been to the Supreme Court and is constitutional. If it helps keep drunk and druger’s off the road I am for it. All they have to do is obey the law and they will not have a problem. Minnesota is trying to pass a law where they do mass driving while impaired laws. They do it in Canada and have for years.
Jeremy if Law Enforcement really wanted to stop Drunk Driving, they’d walk into bars and breathalyze people, or set up “Check Points” outside of the bars. But they don’t do that do they? NO. They wait until they get in their cars, then nab them for high DUI arrests. It’s more than probable cause to believe a crime is being committed in taverns. They have all they need to set up operations directly outside of bars, and even in bars. Stop being a naive’ little boy.
Just because they are in a bar and drinking doesn’t mean they will drive. You are just anti law enforcement period.
No, Luke, I’m not anti-law enforcement: I’m anti-stupidity, anti-hypocrisy, and anti-double-standards. If law enforcement fits all those descriptions, then perhaps yes, I am anti-law enforcement…but that is only as permanent or temporary as their adherence to practices I find problematic allows for. They have the opportunity at any time to stop behaving like totalitarian jackasses. You ready to get fitted for that uniform yet?
