Mason City man – allegedly drunk – weaves in traffic, causes accident, caught at bar

MASON CITY – A Mason City man cut a dangerous path through town one day last week before police were able to catch him as he pulled into a bar parking lot.

According to police reports, at about 5:21 PM Friday, 54-year-old Joseph Patrick Fitzgerald reportedly was driving southbound through the intersection of 6th Street SW and Federal Avenue when he rear-ended another vehicle. He proceeded to leave the scene and continue driving south.

Police described witness accounts which stated Fitzgerald “almost caused more accidents as he drove away. From the witness reports, it looks like Fitzgerald’s vehicle was weaving, cutting other drivers off, and not obeying traffic signals after the 1st reported collision (hit and run) near 6th and South Federal.”

Fitzgerald made his way to the parking lot at Homer’s bar. Officers intercepted him there, and he was arrested for operating while intoxicated a short time later. He was charged with second offense operating while intoxicated. Fitzgerald was arrested by Clear Lake Police in 2009 for first offense operating while intoxicated.
