MINNEAPOLIS – On Wednesday, the Vikings named Bengals assistant Mike Zimmer the 9th head coach in franchise history.
Zimmer spent 5 seasons in Cincinnati as a defensive coordinator. He will succeed Leslie Frazier.
The Vikings announced in December via social media that Leslie Frazier would not return in 2014 as head coach. Frazier assumed the head coaching position in 2010 after Brad Childress was fired. He compiled a 20-33-1 record since, including a 10-6 record in 2012 that ended with a playoff loss in Green Bay.
Zimmer said Wednesday that he is excited to bring a championship to Minnesota.
The Viking played their last game in the Metrodome this past season. A new downtown stadium is now under construction as he dome is torn down. The Vikings will play the next tow seasons at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium.
