CEDAR RAPIDS – Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility customers will benefit from the company’s latest effort to increase energy efficiency in the state. This five-year plan, approved this week by the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), follows more than 20 years of industry-leading energy efficiency programs for Alliant Energy customers. More than $400 million dollars will be invested in energy efficiency over the next five years, which is similar to the investment made in the current plan that ends December 31. The new plan launches January 1, 2014.
“We have been helping customers increase energy efficiency for decades. It’s the right thing to do for the environment and our customers,” said Tom Aller, President of Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility company. “We appreciate the collaboration that took place between Alliant Energy and the other parties involved with the process to create the strong and cost-effective energy efficiency plan approved by the IUB.”
The plan includes the most popular energy efficiency programs from past plans, including home energy audits and insulation rebates, heating and cooling program offerings, new construction programs and commercial and industrial custom rebates. Items added to the plan are expanded energy-use assessment options, increased LED lighting options for homes, businesses and farms, as well as new rebate opportunities for small businesses. The company files an updated energy efficiency plan every five years. Since just 1999, these plans have helped customers save more than 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, which is equivalent to the annual electric usage for nearly 170,000 Iowa homes. In addition, Alliant Energy has also helped customers save enough natural gas to power more than 19,000 Iowa homes for a year.
The energy efficiency plan is part of Alliant Energy’s overall efforts to reduce environmental impacts from energy generation, while also managing customer cost and providing reliable service.
