fat-manThe U.S. obesity rate continues to climb, Gallup-Healthways data showed this week.

The adult obesity rate so far in 2013 is 27.2%, up from 26.2% in 2012, and is on pace to surpass all annual average obesity rates since Gallup-Healthways began tracking in 2008, Gallup reported.

The one-percentage-point uptick in the obesity rate so far in 2013 is statistically significant and is the largest year-over-year increase since 2009. The higher rate thus far in 2013 reverses the lower levels recorded in 2011 and 2012, and is much higher than the 25.5% who were obese in 2008.

Gallup and Healthways began tracking Americans’ weight in 2008. The 2013 data are based on more than 141,000 interviews conducted from Jan. 1 through Oct. 28 as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Gallup uses respondents’ self-reported height and weight to calculate body mass index (BMI) scores.

  1. NIT staff- Not really. I have seen posts on here that insult, malign, and embarrass people. I have seen Matt and others insult Mayor Bookmeyer and others and impinge on their reputations with unwarranted innuendos and unprofessional attacks. And yet, since they are Matt and his friends, their posts do not seem to be monitored. It makes me wonder what NIT is so afraid of that they have to threaten a ban on me. Here is a conspiracy theory for you. Tricia Sandahl is a mole for NIT, passing on information about city hall and the people there and Matt doesn’t want to anger her and lose his source. Is there any other reason he is so defensive about this one certain city hall worker? That about fits in with Matt’s conspiracy theory about the Harley-Davidson project, or the Mercy expansion project that has already been proven a farce since Mercy already owned the houses and property and did nothing but assert their ownership. I have to believe that if Matt had any hard evidence about these issues, he would be pressing legal action instead of flapping his gums. And if the truth hurts, NIT, go ahead and ban me. I’ll still read your site. I’ll still enjoy what’s printed. But trust me, I shan’t loose any sleep over it.

    1. Tricia Sandahl gives me one-sentence answers to basic questions, or sends me elsewhere to get information. She gives little info to NIT. I can appreciate your hypothesis, but it’s way off. I really didn’t like the derogatory way you referred to her, honestly, so I deleted the comment.

    2. NIT staff-A colleague just reminded me that a number of weeks ago, someone posted about Mayor Bookmeyers 7 year old son. A blatant attack on a child, someone’s family. And NIT not only published it, NIT did not remove it, they did not tell the person who posted it to clean it up, or threaten to ban the person who posted it. Perhaps NIT should run an article on double standards concerning newspapers. Or how the editor not liking someone justifies allowing the attack on someone’s family. Or how a 7 year old boy should handle public humiliation after a newspaper allowed something that is no one’s business to be published on the internet. Any response?

    1. NIT staff-I would appreciate a response to my post.

FROM NIT STAFF: Here’s a response: Clean up your comments or face a ban. Sound OK?
