BADAKHSHAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Afghan National Army special forces and commandos from the 5th Special Operations Kandak killed a Taliban sub-commander during Operation “Hindu Kush” Sept. 6 in Badakhshan province.
The body of Mullah Qasi was identified after an engagement that resulted in five insurgents killed, including Qasi, and two others wounded.
Taliban fighters attacked the combined force, which also included Afghan National Army 209th Corps soldiers, using small-arms and heavy-weapon fire in multiple engagements. Afghan security forces countered each attack, eventually overwhelming their aggressors.
The combined Afghan force secured several villages and destroyed an insurgent bunker used as a defensive-fighting position.
Afghan National Security Forces have irreversibly taken the lead for Afghanistan’s security, underscoring the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Tranche 5, Milestone 2013 announcement this summer.
Since Operation “Hindu Kush” began Sept. 6, at least nine insurgents have been killed and three more wounded. Afghan forces cleared numerous villages in search for Taliban, including the home they believe belongs to Taliban shadow governor Qari Fasaihuddin.
There have been no reports so far of Afghan military or civilian casualties. Also, there are no reports of structural damages.
The operation is still ongoing. More information on the operation will be released as it becomes available.
