MASON CITY – Fourth Ward City Council candidate Matt Marquardt today thanked the Globe Gazette for what he called “fair” coverage of his campaign announcement.
“I thought that Mr. John Skipper asked me a few fair questions Tuesday about my campaign for City Council,” Marquardt stated. “I sent John Skipper an email to thank him, personally.
“I didn’t expect anything less, but it’s no secret that NorthIowaToday.com and the Globe Gazette are competing media agencies, so you never know how your competition might treat you,” Marquardt said Wednesday. “I was glad John Skipper made an effort immediately Tuesday morning to approach me in a friendly and positive way and ask about my campaign, and then accept my press release and photo and run it appropriately.”
Marquardt also said he was “pleasantly surprised” to see the story on the front page of the Globe.

“I’m not aGlobe Gazette subscriber, but this morning someone had attached a Globe Gazette newspaper to my door. I immediately noticed my photo and the accompanying story. I was pleasantly surprised.”
Marquardt said feedback from the Globe story has been all positive.
“I should thank the Globe, really, because I have received a number of calls today from citizens across the city who read the newspaper story and are now voicing their support for my campaign. I even accepted my first campaign contribution this afternoon,” Marquardt stated.
Marquardt was an employee at the Globe Gazette from 2000 to 2006.

Although unfounded at this time, word is already on the street that Janis Solberg has folded her tent as I write these words. That’s a good thing for the city because all she did was consume space. BUT….she was a rubber stamp for Bookmeyer; that coming from one of my luncheon companions yesterday. He went on to say that Bookmeyer will now scramble to find someone who he thinks might be able to beat his nemesis Matt Marquardt.
Bookmeyer believes this could be the crack in the dike that could eventually rupture the entire dam. People are pretty much repulsed by Turncoat and lets face it Hickey set fire to his own bridge with the Second Ward. Hickey would be smart to follow Solberg into that dark night……
John’s columns are smart and well written. You may not agree with his opinions but it is nice that he can write about a subject or a person without resorting to name calling or silly nicknames.
Professional courtesy. glad to see that being extended to you. John is really a very decent guy. being a government reporter can,t be the easiest job. now bring your energy, ideas and commitment to improving our community.
Will you provide the same courtesy for your opponent? Class works both ways.
David, I would certainly publish the press release from any candidate.
@David Dunn-why wouldn’t he publish it. It is news. Why are you trying to discredit him before it even starts. You should be a Happy Guy that he is running.
