MASON CITY – Mohawk football coach Justin Penner spoke to the Mason City School Board Monday night about proposed cuts to coaching positions throughout the school district.

Penner spoke about what he called the “three s’s” of coaching: “safety, supervision and skill development” and spoke of not accepting mediocrity in athletics and in life in general from young people.

“This coaching profession is perhaps the most efficient means of getting to young people in our front lines,” Penner said, “and dollar for dollar, you will not find a more efficient methods of teaching life skills to our young people.”

The school board acted to dismiss all the proposed cuts to coaching positions that the administration brought forward.

Mr. Penner is a 1-8 football team mediocrity?

academics are very important, but the statistics prove children involved in Sports, Band, Choir, or the Arts have higher GPA’s as they are required to maintain at a certian level to keeping doing the things they are passionate about in their lives. Teaches finishing, staying focused, how to deal with adversity and many other life lesson.

What really bothers me is that music, choir, and arts aren’t ever considered in budget cuts. I was VERY surprised when I heard the coaching jobs were on the line last week. Of course, nothing changed and nothing ever will in the Mason City School System.

forget about academics, we really need to keep up on sports
