DES MOINES – Basil Minto went out a winner.

The NIACC sophomore beat North Idaho’s Caleb Rivera 9-2 in the fifth-place match at the NJCAA national wrestling tournament Saturday afternoon at the Jacobson Exhibition Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Minto, who also placed fifth in 2012, became NIACC’s fifth two-time all-American and second wrestler under coach Steve Kelly. Wismit Moinius was a two-time all-American in 2011-12.

Minto (27-4) dropped his semifinal match Saturday morning and also fell in the consolation semifinal match before claiming his second straight fifth-place finish.

“It’s good Basil won his last match,” Kelly said of the Cape Coral, Fla., native. “Now, he needs to start thinking about where he’s going to spend the next two or three years.

“It’s going to be sad seeing him leave, but it’s nice we’ll have two returning all-Americans.”

NIACC freshman Shakheim Chapman (197) placed fifth and freshman Alex Stockton (285) placed sixth on Saturday.

Minto, Chapman (23-11) and Stockton (16-15) are Kelly’s 9th, 10th and 11th All-Americans he’s coached since taking over the program in the 2009-10 season.

Chapman (Gumee, Ill.) took a 12-3 major decision from Iowa Central’s Brandon Bradney in the fifth-place match. Chapman also pinned Bradney in 33 seconds in the third-place match at the district meet on Feb. 10.

“That was nice to see him when there and do well,” Kelly said. “He gets better every time he wrestles.

“Every time, he gets a little bit better and the same thing with Alex.”

Stockton (Gardner, Ia.) was pinned by Brett Martin of Muskegon College in 4:34 in the fifth-place 285-pound match.

Heading into Saturday night’s finals, NIACC sits in 16th place with 43 points. North Idaho is the leader with 120 points and Labette Community College is in second with 116 points.

In the semifinals Saturday morning at 184 pounds, Minto dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to Cody Johnson of Labette Community College.

Minto dropped a 2-1 decision to Southwestern Oregon’s Reid Chivers at 184 pounds.

“It’s a tough, tough emotional rollercoaster that you go on,” Kelly said, “both from a coaches and athletic standpoint.

“When you get the top eight guys in the country, there really isn’t much difference. Tomorrow we could wrestle the tournament and there could be a different champ.”

Eight of the nine wrestlers that competed in the national tournament for NIACC were freshman. So a solid nucleus should return for the 2013-14 season for the Trojans.

“It’ll be that much easier,” Kelly said. “You don’t have to teach your philosophies to a bunch of new guys. We’ll be ahead of the game.

“We’re excited about the guys we have coming back. We’ll probably take a week off and then we’ll get back to work with some strength training.”
