I wonder if it was one of those perverts that where having sex at the YMCA.
happyguy-
You want to talk about hypocrisy? Your comments below tell people exactly how they can find out the person’s name. Matt didnt say anything about it. So ‘if’ he is acting unethically then you have raised the bar by giving readers directions. Get a clue.
My sympathies to the family.
I didn’t give any clues to anyone who has half a brain. That must mean you are quite stupid if you couldn’t figure that out on your own. So to you and people as dumb as you I am sorry for giving you a clue as to finding out the name of the person. To most of us it was a no-brainer!!!!
You’re still just as disrespectful to the family for pointing it out. But feel free to resort calling people ‘stupid.’
For all the naysayers go bury your heads in the sand so you dont have to see or read all the negative in this world. Your constant attacks on this site make you look hired cronies. Good job Matt.
Thank God
My sympathy to the family and friends of this person. This is so sad that someone thinks that tomorrow cannot come. I lost a family member 21 years ago, it is news that is printed everywhere. You always ask why and will never know. Matt was just letting those who choose to read NIT of the event. Maybe instead of slaming Matt a small comment with your sympanthy to the family would be nice. Just Thank Gog it wasn’t in your family. It is a horrible tragic event. God Bless them all.
the point is that it was in a public place, no names were given just the location and gender, its not like they were naming off all family members and giving out the persons social security number…give it a break
don’t you mean east side, asbury is on the east side of town, e a s t. good day
That’s what you get when someone tries to be a smart ass when all they really are is a dumbass. LMAO.
Darn west end
Matt, if you print these stories it’s OK. But if the Globe or KIMT run the same thing, it’s not. Awhile back, you slammed them for running a story and even went so far as to show up across the street from a funeral and harrass news reporters for covering the story. But if you run it first, it’s OK. How do you discern the difference?
If it was the globe they would post photos stole of his Facebook and the scene of his death then camp out across from the funeral to ask family how they feel.
Very big difference. They pointed high-def cameras at mourners at the funeral itself and attempted to interview family. They photographed a casket. They ran pictures of the 13 year old boy before he was ever convicted of anything. They ran salacious details of what **allegedly** the boy did. The list goes on.
This story, again, was about a suicide in a public park, not in someone’s private home. There are children nearby at a school having practices. If you cannot see the difference here, then go ahead and hate NIT and be my guest to go to the Globe or KIMT for their style of news. I won’t miss you.
When you say there were children near by practicing you forgot to mention that they were across the river, with trees on each bank of it. One of those practicing was my grandson and I was there today to pick him up. From the practice field you can’t see any of the park. The school itself must be about 1/4 mile from the park. Again publishing news about a suicide is not good reporting. You were just sensationalizing a head line and trying to justify it with the kids at practice. Shame on you Matt. I thought you were better than that. I guess I am wrong.
So, kids don’t use that park? They don’t ride their bikes right by there on the way to practice? There are not walkers out there everyday? Other cars? Had this incident happened in a private home, not likely to be reported. This, however was news in my opinion and we will publish again the next time it happens. You can keep your shame.
And I bet you are hoping something like this happens again real soon. You are so hypocritical. NIT is turning into a tabloid. You care more for the headlines than you do for the news. Thanks to your reporting a family that is going through a very hard time with the loss of a loved one now feels shame when the go out in public knowing that many people know that he died by his own hand. What a news worthy article. Again shame on you and NIT
Which family is that, sir? No names were published. No age. No hometown. That is far less than what was being written all over social media. I can tell you, unashamedly, if someone commits suicide in public place we all have a right to know that happened. I get that you don’t like the story, and I am sorry about that, but NIT will continue to cover incidents in the public eye and not apologize for it. Have a nice day.
In defense of Matt, the GG published a suicide story within the last 22 years. The man shot himself in his own home. I assume because someone heard a gunshot, the police were called and it made the news. I remember this well because the man had stalked me many years ago and, yes, I was relieved I didn’t have to worry about him any more.
One of the several sources. We can hide from the facts of life, keep the public in the dark, or learn to deal with life and discuss in a sensitive way what happens in our world. http://ethics.journalism.wisc.edu/2011/09/24/media-and-the-hard-truth-about-suicides/
We don’t have a right to know how anyone died…are you kidding me. I will not put the persons name on here. I’m suprised you didn’t. After all “do we have a right”. It wasn’t to hard to figure it out This story is nothing but thrashy reporting, grabbing for a headline and it may be public knowledge if someone wants to hunt for it but I think it is immorale to publish an article about it. Why didn’t you just say a body was found? What made it so important to say a suicide? For the third time SHAME ON YOU. I did read or hear about this on any other responsible media outlet. And Katie, 22 years ago. Really?
Matt
You contradict yourself. Yeah he committed suicide in a public place but a 13 yr old committed a homicide and called his father and admitted to what he did to his mother and that was uncalled-for to publish??? With you going to the scene of the funeral to point out bout the media being inappropriate I think if you came off a little better you wouldn’t have made yourself look like such an ass as the rest of them
I am with Matt on this one. I drove past this with my children in the car. You could clearly see him on the picnic table being worked on. I would put money on it that I was not the ONLY person with children who witnessed this. Matt did not disgrace the family or friends as he released NO details on the person (male or female or age.) He simply reported because it was in a VERY public spot.
Courtney T…so by your logic if you drove by my house and saw the EMT’s working on me in the yard it would be good reporting. I know Matt didn’t report who it was but if you read the obits in the GG you know who it was or the only person that fit the time line. If it was him or not, either way he indirectly told who it was or made people think they know who it was. Take your pick…each was disrepectful to the family
You just need to tell your children that the man was sick and the EMT’s were trying to help. They don’t need to know he comitted suicide.
That is exactly what I told my children, but fact of the matter it was a wide open VERY public space. If you lived right on the highway or someplace just as visible I’m sure that it would have been reported on as well. People are nosey and unfortunately want to know what is going on, as you obviously do. You put right in here that you went through the obits. Nosey? I say yes. If it were my family I would have held off on putting it in the paper until a while later and all family was notified, and who’s to say that isn’t the case. You are no better than anyone else on here.
We will not be removing this story.
This incident happened in a public park, adjacent to a school, a very busy place right now with children all over the grounds. We did not publish, nor pursue, the name of the person involved. We also did not publish much more information that was coming here. We respected the family and deleted inappropriate comments.
Not all news is good news, but this still happened and I feel people have a right to know.
This probably isn’t newsworthy. But suicide unfortunately is a problem in out society.
There are many things that contribute to someone taking their own life. Bullying, post war trauma, social issues, mental issues.
All of these topics are on the news daily and all over the country people take their own lives.
I guess there’s nothing wrong with raising awareness.
I feel bad for this family.
I agree that this shouldn’t be in the media. However, several years ago, a man killed himself in MC who had stalked me for over a year about 15-20 years earlier. I would have known he was dead and that I no longer had to even worry about him, but I admit I did find it freakishly interesting that he committed suicide. I would not have known that had the GG not printed the story.
I fail to see how reporting that someone committed suicide is news worthy. I know Matt didn’t report the name(that shouldn’t be to hard to figure out in the obits) but I think out of respect to the family it has no place in the media. A very classless move if you ask me.
I agree this is not newsworthy. Please remove the story.
WTF is wrong with you happyguy. what the hell IS news worthy to you then. something to the effect like, Molly Jones had lunch with her family last week???? Matt only gave a few short paragraphs about what happened. no names, no photos, nothing extreme. why are you bitching about this. go dig a fu**ing hole and bury your head like an ostrich. that way everything will peachy keen in your eyes. some may think my comment is uncalled for. but Id bet many others agree with me
I for one agree with every word. Except somewhere in that paragraph you forgot one…Moron. And I’ll raise ya a jackass.
Hey happyguy, are you just one of those people who like to bitch because you have nothing else to do? And nosey because you read the article and then had to look at the obituaries to see who it was? Lay off Matt. He does a great job reporting. Quit reading NIT if you don’t like it. Go mow your lawn.
It was a public park next to a highway for all you know the guy drove here from another town. I’m glad you did your detective work in the obits for a story you think shouldn’t be printed.
sorry Mat, Asbury is north of high school
Jim, hello. Asbury Park is directly east of MCHS on Highway 122 across from the former greenhouse. Yes, the Asbury neighborhood is north of MCHS … but this story is not related to that neighborhood. The address in the story is the address for the park the MCPD gave me.
Matt is correct. Asbury Park is a little baby park to the East of the highschool that runs along Birch Drive.
high school
i bet all the perfect families in asbury are just flipping out and going into crisis mode
What is WRONG with you?!? A man took his life! Crawl back into your hole and stay there.
okay
Where is Asbury park located by?
East of Mason City High School.
It’s on the east side of the river on Scrip Road. It’s a beautiful place. So very sorry someone felt they needed to end it all.
Duh! The exact location is reported in the article in terms of a street address.
Yes, thank you I saw the address was reported in the story. However, I wasn’t familar with the location of that exact address..hence why I asked where it was by. Matt’s description answered my question.
