MASON CITY – Mason City hosted the Hershey’s Track and Field meet Wednesday, May 30th at Mohawk Field. The meet is considered a local meet. Approximately 60 area kids total entered the meet. Kids who won first place in any event qualify to advance for the state meet in Marshalltown on June 16. The state track meet is for boys and girls 9 to 14. Kids as young as 7 may participate in the local track meet Wednesday.

The most popular event of the night was the 50 meter dash for boys ages 9 to 10 and the 100 meter dash for boys ages 9 to 10. The 100 meter dash for boys 7 to 8 was very popular also. Field events were also a big draw. More than half of the kids who participated in the event participated in the softball toss with 33 participants. The long jump also had 34 participants. The longest event of the evening is the 1600 meter run. There were also relay races that took place with 20 kids of all ages participating in the 4X100 relay race.

The event turned out good. Even though it was a bit chilly, the kids who came seemed to have a good time.
