Scott Dochterman, The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa –

IOWA CITY — Iowa’s football program spent $100,000 more on recruiting during fiscal year 2011 than it did in 2010, according to documents provided by university officials to SourceMedia Group via state open-records laws.

Iowa’s football recruiting costs totaled $307,226 in 2011, up from $207,117 the previous fiscal year.

The expenses incurred during the 2011 fiscal year were almost evenly split between the coaches and prospective student-athletes. Iowa’s coaching staff spent $159,791 ($139,802 on travel, $19,989 on hotels). The school spent $147,436 on recruits, and the largest expense was for food ($58,025). Other costs associated with prospective student-athletes include travel ($35,414), hotels ($23,166), home game tent rentals ($22,828) and printing/mailing ($8,004).

Recruiting costs were at a three-year high in 2011, which netted 23 players signing February letters of intent, including 11 from outside Iowa. In fiscal year 2008 Iowa spent $366,718, the most since 2005.

Wednesday, recruits officially can sign their letters of intent to attend colleges on football scholarships next fall. Iowa expects to sign more than 20 football players, and Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz will discuss the recruits at a 4 p.m. news conference Wednesday.

Here’s a breakdown of recruiting costs and players signing letters of intent in the last five fiscal years:

2011 — $307,226 (23 players, 11 out of state) 2010 — $207,117 (21 players, 16 out of state) 2009 — $240,277 (19 players, 12 out of state) 2008 — $366,718 (24 players, 22 out of state) 2007 — $317,746 (22 players, 16 out of state)
