Cops respond to brawl at Mason City bar

Tailgaters Bar
Tailgaters Bar

MASON CITY – A Mason City bar is on the naughty list after police responded to a brawl there this weekend.

Mason City police tell NIT that things began to go haywire at Tailgaters bar early Sunday morning, February 21.

“At approx. 1:30 AM, witnesses reported a fight at Tailgaters,” a police spokesman said. Police dubbed the incident as a “large altercation”.

“We’re not sure how many were involved… but information supplied on scene suggested that Brent Whipple may have instigated the disturbance,” police explained. He was charged with public intoxication.

“This sustained violation does count as a simple misdemeanor founded nuisance property violation,” the spokesman explained, which falls under the city’s nuisance code. That code was used by city hall to close down the former Eleven Lounge after a number of incidents at that former establishment.

“This looks to be the first (nuisance violation) within the last 12 months,” at Tailgaters, police said.

Isn’t this one of Bookmryers stops?

All the bars in town are Bookmeyers stops. This is just one of them.

The owner of Tailgaters does not own the parking lot of Pros sandwich shop. Pretty simple to figure it out. If they don’t want the bar patrons parking in their lot, that’s their right as owners. The drunk bar patrons can park on the street a block over if need be.

The smoke has cleared on the so called (brawl). And it seems that the quick draw bartender is the cause of all the inflammatory bullshit that has been spread. So now, the audience of unhappy readers can go back to whatever they do, and be assured, the truth has been found. Damn bartenders!!! strike one

There’s always problems at this bar. When people “work” at the bar, they shouldn’t be drinking while working. They rarely if ever, cut someone off who has had too much to drink. And he employees and patrons don’t respect their neighbors. Maybe Tailgaters need to be on the city council agenda.

There’s the story from start to finish. Not a punch thrown. A quick draw bartender calling 911 assuming the worst when she turned to see what the noise was when he tumbled to the ground. Hell of a brawl. But that’s what makes this Internet rag your meal ticket. A whole audience of unhappy people wanting nothing more than to believe the inflammatory bullshit you spread in order to feel better about themselves. Journalist? I don’t think so. Definitely bear greater resemble me to that piece of farm equipment I mentioned before.

Remaining anonymous out of respect for to your family. You can’t choose your relatives.

This is closer to story I got also.

Wow…….brawl? Does 1 person tripping and falling down due to a few too many beers constitute a brawl these days? Why not state the name of the “police spokesman” that provided you with this wealth of information? Was it provided by Barney Fife?

I believe, Mr. Marquardt, you have missed your true calling as an author of fictional novels. They wouldn’t sell, however, due to the fact that your writing/reporting skills suck. A better fit would be the operator of a manure spreader in light of the fact that all you spread is shit.

Matt, several people, that I’m assuming where there, because of their posts on here, know the truth, but they just can’t put it into print. What I can’t figure out is, if someone (just) fell down, why were the police there, did somebody call them, and why. Where’s Skully and Mulder when we need them, the truth is out there.

I would just like the property owners directly south of the “bar” to explain to ALL OF US why they feel so strongly to WANT to tow the cars and trucks of the good people, of this community, off of their mud parking lot after business hours. Their sign is small out in the parking lot, they have coaxed the “bar” to put signs up on their walls on their behalf. Which is taking the monkey off their back and putting it ALL on Kramer’s back for parking in their parking lot. AND YES IT IS A TOTAL WITCH HUNT AFTER BUSINESS HOURS AND THEY KNOW IT. They are getting upset because somebody has called them out on it and sees right through their antics. They stand outside just living and dying to see that sorry soul that is excited to go to their friends retirement party just pull in their parking lot. NOT to stand their and tell them “hey this is private property, get off” BUT STAND THERE and wait for the sorry soul to walk into the “bar” and not see their dinky sign, then IT’S GAME ON!!! GET THAT PHONE OUT AND DIAL UP THE TOW TRUCK BECAUSE WE GOT SOMEONE!! TOTAL WITCH HUNT AND THE OWNERS KNOW IT!!! AND I’M CALLING THEM OUT ON IT-EXPLAIN PLEASE…..

knighteyes, the initial story talks about a brawl, and then ends with a possible (nuisance violation). Instead of answering the question I posted, you went off on a mental rampage of something that happened last year that has nothing to do with this story. My question is a simple, yes or no, can you answer it.

Their insurance policy likely only covers liability incurred by THEIR customers and employees. No one wants drunks stumbling out of a bar, falling down, and then blaming a dip in your parking lot for the fall. People will sue for ANYTHING and your medical insurance will force you to sue someone else to recoup the costs of care for that type of accident. No business owner needs that kind of crap or stress. Quit thinking of yourself and see the bigger picture.

Katie-Very well said!!

Those issues are easily enough solved with a contract and liability coverage by tailgaters. Towing is a money maker for both the tow company and the restaurant owner. I will not eat there. It’s just a matter of time before the angry owner is forced to sell. He will never learn: business brings business.

Who is the owner of tailgaters?

I believe the lot in question was the former party store. The owner, had a agreement, and probably a kick back, to tow any vehicle in his lot past his closing hours. I know, mine was towed, no I did not see the small no parking sign, and I had gone back the next morning to get my car by 8.00am before his store opened. The local tow outfit he had the deal with had towed during the night.
yes it was in his lot, no it was not in any way in anybodys way! Would I or any family member spend 1 dime in that store after that?
Maybe that is why it is closed and for sale

The parking lot in question is clearly marked so if people choose to park in a private lot they deserve to have their vehicle towed. That’s there fault not anybody else’s. And Matt good in reporting this story if it happened at any other establishment you would report on it so this place should not have special treatment.

Do yourself a favor and cruise by tailgaters tomorrow in the AM when they are not open and see if anyone is parked in THEIR lot (not in an actual space because that would be too hard) who is frequenting a nearby business. I think you may be surprised.

lol another hard hitting story from NIT.

It’s nice to see you reporting really important info on this site. This isn’t the first time I have been to your site and seen something so full of BS that I have to say to myself “it’s just someone with nothing better to do than put bad things against people for no other reason than they are bored”. If you have never been to Tailgaters or talk with the owners I would say you don’t know anything about the place. The owners and the workers are all wonderful people and do not put up with these kinds of things. And a brawl is normally more than One person causing problems, whether he was or not. In my understanding about reporting news you want to get ALL the facts, not just one side, before you want to put the story out there.

Wow incredible story huge news did the police break the tank out? The large altercation seems kind of a stretch when only one person was named. Did he go John Claude and scare everyone into not talking. Yea if you know Brent could be farther than the truth. Sometimes I forget what I’m reading. I think it’s news this story feels like Tmz.

Lmfao. Who is more of the bitch….the ones with the badge that think there above everybody or the so called reporter that wrote this ridiculous column? Get the facts straight for one. There actually wasn’t a fight..no punches, no pushing, nothing. The police don’t have better things to do than harass people. You wrote 1 persons name on here…That’s a real big brawl. Big news story you got here. Go eat a big fat dick MCPD!!!

Been to tailgaters many times and never had a problem or seen any thing. Great pizza also. Not saying they don’t have a occasional fight but hey when liquor is involved. Man if these laws were in force back in the 70’s every bar in mason city would be shut down. Also the owners of the establishments that want to tow your car that’s their property their right. I just about had my truck towed there not knowing where to park. Just got it out when the tow truck was backing up to it. Not the owners fault that was my fault. Now I no where to park and have no problems. Tailgaters is a fun spot with good food.

Does standing out back in the alley drinking beer and throwing cans bottles into the parking lots constitute a nuisance.

ALLEN

THE NUISANCE IS THE IDIOTS THAT OWN ADJACENT PROPERTIES TO THIS BAR. THAT LIVE AND DIE TO THINK ITS COOL TO TOW GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS COMMUNITIES CARS BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THEIR PARKING LOTS AFTER BUSINESS HOURS FOR CHRIST SAKE. THESE GOOD PEOPLE ARE AT TAILGATERS FOR A BIRTHDAY PARTY, OR A RETIREMENT PARTY, OR JUST GETTING TOGETHER BECAUSE THERE IS NO WHERE ELSE TO GO IN THIS TOWN TO DO ANYTHING. THEY TOW MY CAR, THEY ARE GONNA HAVE THE HEALTH INSPECTOR BREATHING DOWN THEIR NECKS BECAUSE I SAW RATS AND MICE COMING FROM THE DOOR WAYS AND BEHIND THE PLACE. AND SERVERS NOT WASHING THEIR HANDS AS OFTEN AS THEY SHOULD. THAT STUPID PLACE DOESN’T EVEN DO ENOUGH BUSINESS TO USE THAT MUD HOLE THE CALL A PARKING LOT OUT BACK, ACROSS THE ALLEY ANYWAYS. THERE JUST JEALOUS BECAUSE TAILGATERS IS SEEING THE BUSINESS AND THEY ARE NOT. AND TRUST ME, WE PATRONS ARE TRYING VERY HARD TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM GOING INTO THAT DUMP FOR WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS COMMUNITY. TOWING THEIR CARS, REALLY COOL….

Well there’s Quarry, Larados, MC Brew, and Park Inn has bar too. Try there instead.

Are you sure that the mice and rats aren’t coming out of the bar, you should take some pictures. I think I know the place that you are talking about. Isn’t there signs in those parking lots that say, customer parking only. The last time that I was in the bar, I saw signs posted in the window that said not to park in the party store, pro’s and the beeper peoples parking lots. At least the bar is doing it’s part to keep it’s patrons from getting towed.

My name is Lois Awe, I am the owner of Pro’s Sandwich Shop. I am not going to hide behind a “screen name” as I respond to “Knighteyes” comments about my shop.
First , of all, I want to say that I have the utmost respect for Kramer, he and I have had discussions about my concerns of bar patrons in our lot. Kramer is a wonderful young man. Knighteyes, if you would like to come and talk to me about this feel free. I would love to explain our point of view.
Second, both my husband and I have college educations, we are not idiots.
Pro’s Sandwich Shop, or The Maid Rite, as a lot of people from Mason City, still call it is not just a business to me, It has been a part of my life since I was 18. I didn’t get into this business to get rich, I bought the shop, to keep one of Mason City’s oldest and very loved establishments alive. My hope is my daughter will have the desire to continue to keep the shop open, after I am dead and gone.
When we took over, we closed for a week to clean and paint. My desire was to take it back to the 70’s look it had when my parents owned it. My husband spends every Sunday at the shop, cleaning and making improvements. When you take over a business that old there are always improvements to make. It’s a long tedious project, but like I said before, this isn’t just a business to us, it’s an important part of our lives.
The health inspector comes into our shop twice a year. We have always had good evaluations. If you care to check out the truth in that, go online. You can look at our reports. When we were informed we needed to be wearing gloves we immediately went out and bought them to conform with her instructions.
Presto X comes in twice a month to spray our shop. The hood over the fryers, is cleaned twice a year. Our fryers are dumped and cleaned twice a week. I have a young man come in every night after we close to clean the carpet, floors and bathrooms.
We want everyone’s experience at Pro’s to be the best possible. If it’s not I would love to know how we could make it better.
With that said, “Knighteyes” I hope that you are able to understand why your comments, especially “WE PATRONS ARE TRYING VERY HARD TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM GOING INTO THAT DUMP FOR WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS COMMUNITY. TOWING THEIR CARS, REALLY COOL….” has me very concerned. You and the patrons of Tailgator’s are trying to shut my business down?
I am going to talk to my lawyer about this. I love the shop. We employee 11 young people. They are hard workers. I’m not about to let someone hiding behind a screen name, slander my shop.

I understand your position, Matt. My husband is a retired military man. He has fought for the right of free speech!
I normally ignore negative comments. This one just hit to close to the heart!
Keep up your good work.

Lois we think your place is GREAT. We thank you for allowing MC to enjoy such a great heritage. Jerks are jerks. Drunks are drunks. Your business is beloved.

Thank you, Katie R.!!

Mrs. Awe,

Your right Kramer is a wonderful young man. And I am glad that you have spoken to him about your concerns with the “bar”. I also have a college education. So please explain yourself to me and all the wonderful people of this community why you or whoever it may be, are standing out in the alley and targeting these wonderful people that are going next store to a retirement party, a birthday party, or just to socialize to have their cars and trucks towed from a mud parking lot that has no traffic in it when your business is closed. Please do tell…..and I sure hope you won’t come back with an answer like “it’s my property”. Because YES it does seem very idiotic to have the good people of this communities cars and trucks towed….Just maybe put yourself in our shoes, just try it….So PLEASE DO TELL US ALL WHY YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS

Knightseyes,
If you have any education you might try to use it-in both your reasoning and grammar. Ms. Awe did a pretty good job explaining why she and her husband chose to keep her restaurant open. If you have a problem, talk to her in person. As far as the parking lot you are speaking of, it is private property. How would you like it if someone parked in your driveway or front yard when you weren’t using it? If you can’t walk a 1/2 block or so to get into Tailgaters, then you are too lazy. Tailgaters is a nice bar, Maidrite a nice restaurant. All Mason City needs now, in addition to the city council which is anti small business, is the people to start talking trash about home grown business that provide jobs and services for this town.
