AMES — The Ames Police Department is investigating a disturbing string of hate-fueled vandalism after several vehicles were discovered defaced with swastikas and racial slurs over the past few weeks.
According to authorities, the incidents appear to be random acts of opportunistic vandalism rather than targeted attacks on specific individuals. In each reported case, the affected vehicles were parked in poorly lit areas, providing the perpetrators with cover to use spray paint to scrawl offensive symbols and language onto the cars.
The geographic scope of the spree is broad, with police taking reports from multiple neighborhoods across the city. Affected residents are located in the:
– 100 block of Crystal Street
– 200 and 300 blocks of South 5th Street
– 1600 block of South Kellogg Avenue
– 2800 block of Grand Avenue
The most recent incidents occurred yesterday, prompting a renewed plea from law enforcement for community assistance. Sergeant Amber Christian of the Ames Police Department noted that investigators have not yet identified any suspects on security footage, making public tips a critical component of the ongoing probe.
While no arrests have been made, the department is urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately, particularly in residential areas with limited street lighting.
Anyone with information regarding these crimes is encouraged to contact the Ames Police Department.
