Ellen Jean Thomas was born on March 6, 1953, in West Union, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence “Shorty” Thomas and Ella (Mullins) Thomas. Although she spent most of her childhood in Fayette, Iowa, she moved to West Union during her senior year, where she graduated from North Fayette High School in 1971. She later continued her education at Kaplan University.
Ellen was not one to sit still for long. Over the years she worked as a home aide with Mercy Home Care, served as a CNA, worked in housekeeping, and even brought a little extra to kitchens as a Pampered Chef sales consultant. She believed in staying busy, helping others, and making the most of every day.
Ellen was married to Alan Meier, and together they shared many happy years and countless cherished memories before Alan’s passing in 2015. Their time together was marked by companionship, laughter, and the simple joys of everyday life. They fostered many children over the years, but most especially their foster son, Jeff, whom they cared for over many years.
She was active in her community and church, and was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the IOOF Lodge, and Holy Family Catholic Church. Within the church she was involved in the St. Maximillian Circle, where she served as Circle President and Guild Press, always willing to lend a hand and keep things organized. She also spent time volunteering at the North Iowa Youth Center.
Ellen enjoyed the little things that make life fun. She loved listening to country music, casting a line while fishing, and spending time on the golf course or bowling alley. She was also a dedicated sports fan who rarely missed a Minnesota Twins game and enjoyed watching basketball, football, and even the occasional hockey game.
She is survived by her brother, Tom (Linda) Thomas; her cousin, Becky Thomas; her uncle, Don Thomas; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Shorty and Ella Thomas; her husband, Alan Meier; her parents-in-law; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
