A Funeral Service for Janice Nissen, age 86, of Lake Park will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11:00am at Lake Park Methodist Church in Lake Park. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 10:00-11:00am at the church in Lake Park. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Peterson.
Janice Jean (Otten) Nissen was born May 7, 1939, in rural Peterson/Sutherland, Iowa, the daughter of Omer and Marjorie (Rohrbaugh) Otten. She was raised on the family farm near Sutherland and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1957.
Janice was united in marriage to Richard Nissen. Throughout the years they lived in Owatonna, Minnesota, and Peterson, Iowa, before eventually settling in Lake Park, Iowa.
She first worked at Berkley’s in Spirit Lake and later became a CNA. Janice spent many years caring for others at the Lake Park Nursing Home, where she worked for over 30 years and formed many lasting friendships with coworkers and residents.
Janice was a member of the Lake Park Methodist Church and enjoyed spending time with the ladies of the church, often helping serve funeral lunches. She also enjoyed many years with the ladies of the Topps Group.
Music and dancing brought Janice a lot of joy, especially evenings spent dancing at the Sioux Valley ballroom and other dance halls. She was also a big fan of Elvis. Janice loved watching high school basketball games, especially when her grandchildren were playing.
Above all, Janice loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved cherry tomatoes and picking fresh tomatoes out of the Ron’s gardens – there were never too many!
Janice passed away on March 8, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Society in Holstein, Iowa.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Ron (Shelli) Nissen and their children: Amber (Rob) Ramsey, Brian (Jamie) Nebelsick, Travis (Bryanna) Nissen, and Brady Nissen; daughter, Jolene (Steve) Clark and their children: Jason Clark, Lindsey Clark, Kevin (Allie) Clark, and Heather (Craig) Kriener; daughter, Linda (Brian) Elsbecker and their children: Cory (Stephanie) Vaske and Zach (Megan) Elsbecker; daughter, Lonna (Brian) Draayer and their children, Alyssa Yaw and Taylor (Bryanna) Yaw; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Grothe and Elaine (John) Weir; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann (Harlan) Will; and brother-in-law, Paul Grothe.
