CHARLES CITY — Slick winter conditions resulted in a two-vehicle collision near downtown Charles City on a recent Sunday morning, leaving one car totaled but both drivers miraculously unharmed.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:53 a.m. on January 18, 2026, at the intersection of Hulin Street and North Main Street.

According to the Charles City Police Department, a white 2013 Toyota Highlander driven by 26-year-old Kieu Pham of Charles City was traveling northbound on North Main Street. Police say Pham attempted to stop at the intersection but lost traction due to snow and icy road conditions.

Unable to regain control, the Highlander slid into the intersection and struck a tan 2008 Saturn sedan that was traveling westbound on Hulin Street. The Saturn was driven by 68-year-old Connie Schmitt, also of Charles City.

While the impact was severe enough to total Schmitt’s vehicle—causing an estimated $5,000 in damage—authorities reported that there were no injuries to either driver. Pham’s SUV sustained approximately $2,500 in damage.

Police cited Pham for failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor. Pham later pleaded guilty and paid $210.25 to Iowa courts in fines and costs.
