Susan Johnson, 85 of Algona, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Her family will be hosting a private celebration of her life at a later date. Susan Jane Johnson was born June 20, 1940. She was the first born of William ‘Jack’ and Ella (Voight) Johnson. She grew up in Rolfe, IA and graduated from Rolfe High School.
Susan was first employed by the local Super Value grocery store. In 1962, she went to work at the Rolfe State Bank. She was employed there for 44 years, retiring in 2006. Susan first worked in Bookkeeping and as a teller. Later on, she was promoted to cashier, Vice President and Compliance Officer status. “I really will miss the customers and staff when I retire” was her direct quote. After her retirement, Susan moved to Algona to be closer to family but Rolfe was never far from her thoughts.
In her younger days, Susan enjoyed golf and bowling. At one time she bowled in three different leagues in Pocahontas, West Bend and Laurens. She also bowled in the National Bowling Tournament in Minneapolis.
Susan was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church until she moved to Algona in 2010 and then transferred her membership to Trinity Lutheran Church. Susan was a Sunday School Teacher, church choir member, primary worship leader and served the Lord and St. Paul’s as a Financial Secretary and Deacon.
Susan loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Over the years she attended countless sporting events in Algona and Des Moines starting in the mid 1970’s. She was the best overnight host at her house in Rolfe creating many lifelong memories. She was the greatest Grotto tour guide, Chinese checkers partner and homemade pizza maker. Susan was always ready for a game of ‘Hand and Foot’ or Mexican Train with friends and family. She loved watching the Hawks and the Vikings as well as reading and traveling with friends, especially her best friend Velma Shaw Johnson. The two shared over 80 years of close friendship.
Preceding her death are her parents, sister: Julie Davis, niece: Angela Johnson and dear cousin Evelyn Ollom.
Left to mourn are William (Betty) Johnson, Darrel Davis and her much loved nieces and nephews: Sherry Wells, Shelly (Joel) Schmidt, Terry (Joan) Johnson, Laurie (Randy) Fitzgerald and Lisa (Matt) Muller; great nieces and nephews: Tyler (Devon) Wells, Taylor Wells, Payton Robertson, McKinnley (Kane) Johnson, Hunter Long, Ella, Drew and Jack Muller; great-great nephews Greyson Robertson and Tucker Wells
Susan always said it best – “Jesus Loves You and So Do I.”
