OBIT: Shirley Butler

Shirley Mae Butler, 92, Greene, IA, passed into her Savior’s loving arms on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Floyd County Medical Center. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Calvary Baptist Church, Greene.

Shirley Mae Butler, 92, Greene, IA, passed into her Savior’s loving arms on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City, IA. She was born Jan. 9, 1933, in Greene, IA, to Albert and Pearl (Van Raden) Hammel. She graduated from Greene High School in 1950. Shirley attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (now University of Northern Iowa) and received a teaching diploma. She taught third grade in Dumont, IA, before her marriage.

Shirley married Paul L. Butler on Nov. 27, 1955, at Calvary Baptist Church, Greene. They farmed in the Greene and Bristow areas for 40 years until retiring in Greene in 1998. Shirley was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and youth group for many years and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Circle.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Philip (Jeannette) Butler, Colfax, IA; daughter, Janell (Frank) Wojtowicz, New Brighton, MN; grandchildren, Holly (Ryan) Jochims, Omaha, NE; Melinda Harshbarger, Bellevue, NE; great-grandchildren, Trey Jochims and Brianna Jochims, Omaha, NE; nieces, Denise (Todd) Studer, Blaine, MN; and Elizabeth (Charles) Clute, Atlanta, GA; nephews, Neil Ahlquist, New Brighton, MN; Scott Ahlquist, Minneapolis, MN; Brian (Heather) Ahlquist, Spokane WA; Steven Butler, Eldridge, IA; and cousins, Barbara Kaminen, Ishpeming, MI: and Patti (James) Olmstead, Shell Rock, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; brother, Pfc. Donald Hammel who died in action in World War II; sister, Carol Ahlquist; daughter, Kristin; grandson, Senior Airman Dale Butler; nephew, David Butler; sister-in-law, Doris Butler; and brother-in-law Rev. John Butler.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Calvary Baptist Church, Greene, IA, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene IA.

Memorials preferred to Calvary Baptist Church, Greene Public Library, and Greene Volunteer Ambulance.
