BROOKLYN, New York – No. 1 UConn (12-0, 3-0) defeated No. 11 Iowa (10-2, 1-0) at the Women’s Champions Classic in Brooklyn, New York, 90-64.
Iowa’s 26 turnovers spelled doom for the Hawkeyes. Uconn led by 10 points after the first quarter and never looked back, and led by as many as 31 points in the 4th quarter.
Hannah Stuelke led Iowa for the second consecutive game with 17 points (8-11 FG), five assists, and five rebounds. Stuelke dished out a season-high in assists. Stuelke has notched double figures in three straight games and in nine contests overall.
Taylor Stremlow registered 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range and chipped in 6 tuurnovers. Stremlow has 10+ points in three games this season.
Chit-Chat Wright recorded 16 points, (4-8 3FG), four rebounds, and three assists. It was Wright’s fifth game in double figures as a Hawkeye.
Ava Heiden had a team-high six rebounds and added eight points.
The last time Iowa played the AP No. 1 team in the country was Notre Dame on Nov. 29, 2018.
Iowa has faced UConn twice in the regular season when the Huskies were the AP No. 1 team in the nation. (Nov. 21, 1999)
The nationally ranked Hawkeyes are set to host Penn State on Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. (CT) in Iowa City. The contest will air on BTN and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
