February 5, 1935 – December 12, 2025

Everett Schacht, age 90, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Accura Healthcare in Cresco, Iowa.

Everett Carl Schacht was born on February 5, 1935, to Carl and Edna (Rickmann) Schacht in Lime Springs, Iowa. He attended school in the Cresco area and graduated from Cresco High School.

On July 8, 1967, he married Carmen Long in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Together they had a son, Neil. The couple farmed north of Cresco. They milked cows and raised hogs until 1968. They continued crop farming and turned their focus to cattle and hogs.

Everett was a farmer at heart. He had the honor of receiving the Iowa Farmer Degree. He was most fond of Allis Chalmers and Ford tractors. He loved to help with the field work, and was still planting beans and hauling corn when he was in his 80’s. During the winter months he enjoyed going to farm shows with a group of local farmers.

Everett was a faithful member of the Howard County Historical Society. He also helped Carmen with the Easter Seals program. He enjoyed playing cards in the neighborhood card club. As Carmen’s health began to decline, Everett was very devoted to being her caregiver.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Accura Healthcare and Howard County Community Hospice for the care and comfort they provided to Everett.

Survivors include his son Neil Schacht of Cresco. He is also survived by Carmen’s sister in-law Alma “Al” Long and nieces and nephews: Greg (Kris) Long, Brian (Lori) Long, Tom (Colleen) Altman, Mike Kos and Gayle Kos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carmen in 2019 and a sister Marjorie. Along with his mother and father in-law Carlos and Dorothy Long, Carmen’s sisters Carlene (Art) Altman and Corriene (Larry) Kos and Carmen’s brothers Larry Long and Gerald Long.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church. Schmelzer Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.
