June 10, 1962 – October 24, 2025

A memorial service for Marc will be held at a later date.

Marc David Benedict was born on June 10, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He passed away at Mercy One Hospital in Mason City on October 24, 2025 at the age of 63.

Marc was the youngest child of Russell and the late Marilyn (Hoover) Benedict. He graduated in 1980 from John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and later graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education. He went on to teach junior high and high school science for many years, first in Texas. While in Texas, he met his wife, Sofia. The couple was married in Marc’s hometown of Robins, Iowa, in December 1990. They returned to Texas where they welcomed their son Zachariah Glenn Benedict in 1993. When Marc was offered a job in Terril, Iowa, the family relocated there. He taught in the Terril and Graettinger-Terril School district until his recent retirement. While teaching at the school, he also enjoyed directing the school plays and starting up the No Boundaries Program, which placed students with local companies for applied education. Marc enjoyed conquering challenges, in the classroom and in life outside of school. He cared deeply for his students, finding new ways to engage them in learning.

Being a part of the community and giving back to it was very important to Marc. He was an active member of the local Business Club. Marc also took the time to pick up food from area stores and deliver it to the food pantry. Marc had a love of the theater. He enjoyed acting, directing, and recently helped to remodel at the Spencer Play House. Being handy and a skilled craftsman was another talent for which Marc will be remembered. Leaving behind many unique and beautifully made pieces.

Marc was always up for an adventure. Fishing with his brother and taking small-engine plane rides with his past students were among his favorites. Marc will be remembered for his kind heart and willingness to give to those around him. He continued to give even after his death, as an organ and tissue donor.

Marc in survived by his wife Sofia of Graettinger, his son Zach (Allison) Benedict of O’Fallen, MO, his father Russell Benedict, his siblings Mike (Susan) Benedict, Jim (Kathy) Benedict, and Bob Benedict, his brothers-in-law Dave Hepker, and Rene T Lopez and his partner William C. Lopez, and many nieces and nephews.

Marc was preceded in death by his mother, his infant son Alexander Levi Benedict, his sister Virginia Benedict Hepker, and an infant brother Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.
