OELWEIN – A stabbed victim raced to the hospital as cops scrambled to locate a suspect after two people were attacked inside a Northern Iowa home.

At approximately 4:32 AM on Friday, October 17, 2025, an Oelwein Police officer was on patrol and observed a vehicle driving erratic and at a high rate of speed. As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the Fayette County Emergency Dispatch Center advised that they had received a report of a stabbing and that the victim was on their way to the hospital. The officer continued to follow this vehicle to the hospital and discovered two stabbing victims in the car. Assistance was provided to the victims and they were taken into the MercyOne Emergency Room.

During the course of the investigation, Oelwein Officers and Fayette County Deputies learned that an altercation occurred in the 10 block of 3rd Street NW, inside of a residence. Officers investigated the scene of the incident and made the following arrest:

1) Nicholas Michel Spratt, 42 of Oelwein on the following charges:

  • Assault Willful Injury-Causing Serious Injury Class C Felony – Count 1

  • Assault Willful Injury-Causing Serious Injury Class C Felony – Count 2

  • Child Endangerment – Aggravated Misdemeanor

The Oelwein Police Department was assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Oelwein Fire Department, and MercyOne Hospital. The subject was taken into custody and transported to the Fayette County Jail pending an initial appearance. Additional charges are pending, and this case is still under investigation.
