MASON CITY — Mason City will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 11:30a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, just south of Southbridge Mall at 214 S. Delaware Avenue in the Riverwalk District, to mark the start of construction on the first new downtown hotel built in more than a century.

The 88-room Home2 Suites by Hilton extended stay hotel, managed by Kinseth Hospitality Companies, will be part of the new Riverwalk District and will connect to Music Man Square via Mason City’s first skywalk. The hotel will feature many modern amenities designed with guests in mind, including an indoor pool. The
last new hotel built downtown was the Hanford, which opened in 1922.

This hotel is the third and final phase of Mason City’s River City Renaissance (RCR). The RCR initiative already includes a modern multi-purpose arena and an indoor-outdoor performing arts pavilion on the plaza. The overall project framework was approved by Mason City voters with overwhelming support.

“The groundbreaking represents a story of faith that our very best days are still ahead,” said Mayor Bill Schickel. “It is the same faith our forebears demonstrated time and again. It is the belief, inspired by Meredith Wilson, that a dream can take someone from River City to Broadway. It is the vision, shaped by Frank Lloyd Wright, that beautiful things happen when imagination meets
determination.”

He added, “The beautiful skywalk — once dubbed a ‘bridge to nowhere’ — now becomes a bridge to our bright future, linking our rich heritage to an even brighter tomorrow.”

City Administrator Aaron Burnett remarked, “This new hotel is the realization of creating a true entertainment district that will welcome people to Mason City to enjoy not only our storied history and architecture, but the excitement of the community today with music, arts, and outdoor recreation!”

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
