Bruce Johnson, 70, of Iowa Falls, passed away at his residence. Arrangements are pending with the Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Iowa Falls.
Bruce Carleton Johnson was born on May 7, 1955 in Iowa Falls, Iowa to E. Max and Virginia Johnson (their third born child in 3.5 years)! He stood out from the start and was not content to blend into the status quo. His curiosity and bold demeanor led him on various adventures with many different cronies (whom he dearly loved and stayed connected to throughout his life). Among other things, Bruce was a natural at the piano, scrabble, storytelling and was cherished by the margins – young and old.
Bruce graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1973. He worked at Riverside Book and Bible for many years. He furthered his education at Ellsworth and eventually received a B.A. from UNI. Bruce spent time around the U.S. and traveled to Asia for an extended period, but Iowa Falls was his true home community.
Bruce was known for his quick, wry sense of humor and had comebacks before conversations even started! He lived with passion as well as compassion and conviction. A serious car accident in 1981 changed his trajectory and physical ability, yet his personality was unwavering. He was a loyal friend and will be missed by many.
He is survived by siblings, Tom Johnson, Sara (Keith) Hardy and Teresa Spurlock (in addition to Starla Johnson and many nieces and nephews). He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jerry Spurlock.
Bruce was raised in a pack of cousins (and neighbors) who are held dear as well. Those preceded deaths were Uncle George, Aunt Kathy and Mark Stevens with surviving cousins: Tim, Mary, Anne and Joe. The family would also like to thank so many of Bruce’s “extended family” – you know who you are!
A gathering will be held from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM on June 30 at the Boat Club in Iowa Falls.
Cards and memories can be sent to: Tom Johnson, 516 Railroad St. Iowa Falls, IA 50126 (memorials: Caulkins Nature Area)
