After children hurt in multiple locations, Northern Iowa man nabbed in standoff with police

ARLINGTON, IOWA - Emergency calls to police led authorities to a rural Northern Iowa location where they coaxed a suspect out of a house to answer for children being hurt in more than one location.

ARLINGTON, IOWA – Emergency calls to police led authorities to a rural Northern Iowa location where they coaxed a suspect out of a house to answer for children being hurt in more than one location.

On February 28, 2025, at approximately 11:00 PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took multiple 911 calls of an assault that had occurred at 10736 Cable Road in Arlington, Iowa.

Information provided to law enforcement stated a male subject was in the home, armed with a weapons and a thermal scope, with multiple juveniles, and one child was already injured.

Multiple agencies responded to the call and staged at the home. Once on scene, contact was made with the male subject, de-escalation techniques were used, and the male subject was talked out of the home. Law enforcement made contact and took custody of subject without incident. A

After an investigation, 38-year-old Cody Ray Smith (pictured at top) of Arlington, Iowa, was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

– Kidnapping (Class B Felony)

– Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Aggravated Misdemeanor)

– Harassment 1st Degree (Aggravated Misdemeanor)

Smith was taken into custody and transported to Fayette County Jail, where he was later released on a $30,000/10% approved bond. He awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 12, 2025 at 9:30 AM.

Police say it also was found through the investigation related to this call there was another assault that occurred at a different location, involving multiple juveniles, in which one juvenile sustained serious injury. Police say this case is being investigated, and charges are pending.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Iowa State Patrol, Fayette Police Department, West Union Police Department, Strawberry Point Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and Arlington and Oelwein Ambulance Service.
