Velda Ann Lynch, 89, of Sumner, died Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, February 10, 2025, at Faith United Church of Christ with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. The service will be live streamed on Faith U.C.C. YouTube page. Burial will follow the luncheon on Monday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Sunday, February 9th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Monday. Memorials may be sent to the family at 704 E. Main St., La Porte City, IA 50651.

Velda Ann, daughter of Harold and Martha (Klemp) Ferguson was born January 8, 1936, at the family’s home, rural Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized on January 26, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek, rural Sumner and confirmed on May 6, 1951, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, rural Sumner. Velda received her education in the Sumner Schools and graduated from Sumner High School in 1954. Following graduation, she lived in Illinois for a few years and worked at a meat processing plant. Velda returned to the Sumner area and on October 6, 1956, she was united in marriage with Dale Lynch at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. To this union five children were born, Bob, Mike, Patty, Jackie, and Debbie. Velda worked for a couple years at Kroblin Transport, prior to becoming a homemaker. She had many trips with Dale on his over the road truck routes, something she really enjoyed. Velda was a long time faithful member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, where she served as Superintendent of the Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, and also served as Treasurer. She has been a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli the last several years. She also was a Troop Leader for Girl Scouts for a number of years. Velda enjoyed puzzles, cards, sewing, the Chicago Cubs, bowling (qualified for State Bowling several years), but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.

Velda is survived by four children, Mike Lynch of Sumner, Patty (Roy) Porter of Winchester, Tennessee, Jackie Knapp (Craig) of Hawkeye, and Debbie (David) Harkness of LaPorte City; daughter-in-law, Paula Lynch of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; close friends, Sharon and Shelby Stufflebeam; sister, Jean Jones of Hawkeye; brother, LaVern (Deb) Ferguson of Moline, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Linda Ferguson of Fairbank and Bonnie Schultz of Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Velda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; son, Bob; grandson, Dustin Lee; two brothers, Bud and Gary Ferguson; Mike Lynch’s significant other, Julie Fink; five brothers-in-law, Milton Jones, Glenn, Donald, and William Lynch and William Hebl; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hebl and Mary Lynch; nephews, Greg Jones, Lucas Ferguson and Jason Lynch; and niece, Margaret Straude.
