CLIVE, IOWA – Icy, slick roads in the Des Moines metro area made for hazardous driving, and drivers in a big pile-up Friday on a busy Interstate avoided serious injury or worse.

On the morning of December 13, 2024, at 5:59 AM, the Clive Police Department responded to a four-vehicle accident at University Avenue and Interstate 35/80 Northbound. This accident involved two commercial vehicles and two passenger cars.

Officers investigating the scene reported that one of the tractor trailers hit the center barrier of the interstate and it spun into other traffic. The tractor trailer then came to rest on the outside shoulder of the interstate, blocking the on ramp from University Avenue to the interstate. While this crash remains under investigation, thankfully, there were no injuries to any of the drivers.

Currently, the truck has been moved and the interstate is open. We ask that drivers continue to use caution in the area, while emergency and recovery vehicles are still working at the scene.
“It is important to remember that this is, and will remain, an active construction zone through the winter. We ask that drivers travel in the area at safe speeds, remain aware of their surroundings and take weather conditions into consideration, as we move further into the winter months” stated Chief Mark Rehberg.

The Clive Police were assisted in this case by the Clive, Urbandale and West Des Moines Fire Departments as well as the Iowa State Patrol.
