MASON CITY – A city of Mason City employee who served the community for decades is retiring, and was recognized for his long-time efforts at this week’s City Council meeting.
Bill Stangler will be retiring from his position as Operation & Maintenance Manager, and his shoes will be tough to fill, having knowledge of how almost everything works in Mason City. According to remarks made by Mayor Bill Schickel at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, he wanted his retirement to fly under the radar, but Schickel and his shiny badge had other ideas. He brought the room to its feet with applause in recognizing all the years of service Mr. Stangler brought, as the video below shows.
Stangler was honored at the 2023 Band Festival with the “Klempnauer Award” for his efforts behind the scenes in contributing to the success of Mason City’s biggest annual event. According to the Mason City Chamber of Commerce:
“As the City’s Operations and Maintenance Manager, Stangler works tirelessly to ensure the North Iowa Band Festival runs smoothly. Often his efforts, and his department’s efforts, are the items festival-goers don’t necessarily notice. Everything from ensuring the correct roads are closed, bleachers are in place, and tables are set up in the park. But his work with Band Festival stems far beyond what is expected for his position. Stangler truly loves the Festival and has served for decades on the Band Festival committee.”
